How do you keep your cats active and healthy?

Cat jumps and plays while another looks on

When you live in a city, keeping your cats active and healthy can prove to be a challenge. Apartment living doesn’t provide much room for indoor cats to run around like they would in the wild, so we like to make sure we give them a chance to stay fit and active each day. Luckily for us, our three tuxedo boys are always up for a game of catching the feathered “bird” on a string. We love playing this game just as much as they do!Three cats jumping to play with toy

Jack is probably the most active of the bunch. He will literally jump straight up into the air and flip backward to catch one of his favorite toys. It’s kind of amazing. He will also bring the toy to you, drop it in your lap, or, if you’re in bed dead asleep, drop it on your face. He’ll then give you a few loud meows to make sure you get the point. Hugo is a different kind of active. He jumps a lot, but he’s also a climber, so we’ve made sure to keep our home full of places he can climb. He loves scurrying up to the top of the cat tree and jumping onto the shelf we have up there. Ben moves a little slower, but will still join in on the festivities when the feathered bird on a string comes out! We think it’s important to keep all three of them active, considering they spend most of their free time enjoying cat naps and lounging around!

When it comes to feeding the boys, we know it’s just as important to keep the healthy theme in mind. That’s why we’re happy giving them Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend, a new blend of dry cat food that makes us feel good about what’s going into their bellies. It contains a combination of crunchy kibble and tender shredded meaty bits. You can tell just by looking at it that the ingredients are a cut above what you’d find in any other kibble. In fact, the first ingredient is real salmon or chicken (depending on the flavor you buy). If you’ve been following our blog posts, you know that Jack is one of my pickiest eaters; he turns his nose up at so many brands, but Purina is not one of them. Whenever I bring the bag in from the car, his just face lights up. Knowing I am helping my boys stay healthy and active puts a smile on my face, too, Jack! What do you do to keep your indoor cats healthy? We want to hear your ideas and see your photos!

  1. I feed my beautiful tuxedo half Primal Raw frozen food and half Orijen or Feline Caviar brand dry food. I rotate which protein every time I buy more food.

As for activities, he really enjoys chasing a laser pointer. He will also run laps around the house on his own. I put a bird feeder on the back porch last summer and he sometimes will sit at the window for hours just watching the various birds.

  2. The boys love the laser pointer, too! And once we are able to buy a house, a bird feeder is the first thing I want to buy.

  3. My cats get most of their exercise by playing and wrestling with each other. The youngest is not two yet – so I wonder if that will diminish as she gets older, since she’s usually the one to instigate the wrestle sessions.

    1. I find the wrestling sessions with our boys doesn’t diminish as they get older! They still love to play and be active, so that’s good.
