August 17 is National Black Cat Awareness Day! Did you know black cats often wait longer for adoptive homes than other cats because of the negative stereotypes associated with them? It’s a sad but true fact! We want to help change that! Throughout the entire month of August 2015, Tipsy Nip is donating 25% of all website retail sales of their Black Magic Tickle Pickle to Black Cat Rescue, a no-kill cat rescue organization in Boston. This group of amazing people is made up of a network of volunteers dedicated to saving the lives of homeless black cats and kittens. They accept foster cats from all over Massachusetts, including strays and owner surrenders, providing them with safe and loving homes until they can find a permanent place to call their own. BCR also works hard to improve the public image of black cats and animal adoption in general. In short, BCR is just an incredible group of people and we’re so happy to be helping out with this cause!
Here are some facts about black cats you might not know (provided by BCR):
- Black cats are melanistic, which creates their rich black coat color and golden-hued eyes. Melanism may also enhance a cat’s immune system.
- There are 22 breeds of cats with solid black coats recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association.
- Black Cats are not always considered bad luck! In fact, the Celts, Scottish, and Egyptians consider them good omens!
So, what can you and I do to help? Well for one, spread the word about black cat awareness! Next, head on over to Tipsy Nip’s website to order the Black Magic Tickle Pickle!
